UniSC collaborates on water security at various levels:

Local Collaboration: UniSC works with local stakeholders through initiatives like the Integrated Water Management (IWM) project, which aims to optimize water use and conservation in the community.

Regional Projects: UniSC is involved in regional efforts such as the Sunshine Coast BioBlitz, which engages citizen scientists and experts in biodiversity surveys and environmental conservation activities, promoting sustainable water practices. UniSC regularly hosts workshops and public lectures on water security, providing valuable knowledge and practical solutions to local residents and government officials

Local Government: UniSC and the Sunshine Coast Council collaborate on several research projects focused on water security:

  • Climate Change Adaptation: This project addresses coastal and water management, disaster and natural hazard management, and urban and regional policy. It aims to strengthen adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters and integrate climate change resilience measures into policies and planning
  • Sunshine Coast Region Ecosystem Function Assessment: This assessment informs land use planning and decision-making at local and state government levels, particularly in relation to protecting ecological processes and natural systems, including water.

National and Global Partnerships: UniSC participates in national and international research projects and conferences, such as the Queensland Water Industry Operations Conference & Exhibition, to share knowledge and develop water security solutions.

  • UniSC is leading a three-year, A$2.25 million project funded by the Australian Government (ACIAR) to support the relocation of coastal communities in Fiji and Vanuatu due to rising sea levels. The project focuses on ensuring water security and supply for these communities by collaborating with local governments and institutions to develop evidence-based water management plans
  • UniSC's coastal location leads to research and community engagement around ocean water management and security. A key example is our next-generation citizen science coastal monitoring program, Coast4d.
