UniSC has a process in place to treat wastewater across all campuses.
UniSC employs a comprehensive and sustainable approach to wastewater treatment. Here’s an overview of our process:
- Collection and Initial Treatment: Wastewater is collected and directed through a system of swales and creeks before being stored in two large lakes on campus.
- Filtration and Purification: The water treatment plant at UniSC includes several stages of filtration:
- Glass Media Filtration: Filters water to 4 microns.
- Ultra-Filtration System: Removes bacteria, viruses, and particulates with a 0.03 µm nominal pore diameter.
- Usage: Treated water is used for various purposes on campus, such as:
- Irrigation: Untreated lake water is used for irrigating campus fields.
- Cooling Towers and Pools: Treated water is used as make-up water for the cooling towers and pools, significantly reducing the use of mains water.
- Monitoring and Maintenance: The plant is maintained and monitored daily, with monthly water quality testing to ensure biological safety.
This integrated system not only conserves water but also reduces emissions and water bills, showcasing UniSC’s commitment to sustainability.
