Bachelor of Nursing Science (Honours)

This is your first step towards an academic career, nursing research or PhD.

This honours program has a strong focus on clinical practice and allows you to research contemporary health issues. You’ll develop your research capabilities and choose a health care topic that sparks your interest for your research project.

This honours program has a strong focus on clinical practice and allows you to research contemporary health issues. You’ll develop your research capabilities and choose a health care topic that sparks your interest for your research project.

Our program is designed to support your transition from a Registered Nurse’s role to professional roles, academia or further study. You’ll complete a professional internship to gain practical experience and it could even help you secure a job at the end of your degree.

The opening of a new public hospital in 2016 presents tremendous job opportunities, or consider further research such as the Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy.

Admission requirements

Students will have satisfied the requirements for the award of an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Nursing Science award (or equivalent), be registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), met the English language requirement and have demonstrated a high level of achievement evidenced by a GPA of 5.0 over the second and third year of the degree program.

Career opportunities

Registered Nurse in a wide range of practice contexts and roles including nurse researcher. As a first step to an academic career pathway.

Membership

Graduates would be eligible to apply for membership to the Australian College of Nursing.

Program structure

For students commencing Semester 1 or 2,  2015. All other students please refer to previous handbooks.

To graduate from the Bachelor of Nursing Science (Honours) a student is required to complete 48 units of coursework at AQF Level 8 and 48 units of study in the research component.

Coursework component

Complete the following four (4) courses:

NUR721 The Psychology of Learning
NUR713 Using Data for Learning
NUR709 Secondary Professional Learning 4: The Professional Empowered and Engaged

Plus select one (1) of the following courses:

PUB708 Communication and Thought
HLT701 Introductory Calculus
NUR751 Science Research Methods
NUR705 Professional Experience: Orientation to the Profession
NUR707 Introduction to Applied Mathematics
NUR722 Calculus II and Linear Algebra
HLT702 Discovering Science

Research component

Complete the following four (4) courses:

NUR731A Discrete Mathematics
NUR731B Introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
NUR731C Assessing Learning
NUR731F Professional Experience: Managing Learning Environments

Classes of honours

The degree will be awarded in one of the three classes:

  • Class 1
  • Class 2 (awarded as Division 1 or Division 2)
