Program overview
The tourism, leisure and events industries employ thousands of people in a diverse range of roles, both within Australia and overseas. The University’s location in a popular tourist destination allows you to gain practical industry experience while learning the theory required for career success.
Courses are designed to link with the local tourism and leisure industry through guest speakers, field trips and other industry-focused activities. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a semester of practical experience within a tourism, leisure or events organisation. This internship has often led to employment opportunities for students and graduates.
Courses in the program have a focus on the delivery of services in a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable manner. You will gain an understanding of the needs and motivations of people—and of what they seek to do with their leisure time—and will learn how to develop and manage businesses that conceptualise, develop and deliver interesting and innovative experiences for clients.
You will also develop skills in the allied areas of communication, creativity and inter-cultural understanding, while courses in strategic and human resource management will enable you to understand how organisations function ‘behind the scenes’.
Courses in marketing or sport and event marketing explore the various facets of promotion, communication and sales. Advanced elective courses can be chosen from any faculty, and may include a four-course minor.
You can apply to undertake first-year courses in this program at the USC Noosa Centre. Please note that the option to study at Noosa is not available to international students.
Professional recognition
Students and graduates can apply to the Australian Tourism Research Institute, the Pacific Area Travel Association, the Tourism Association of Australia and the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education.
