Program overview

This is a four-year program enabling graduates to apply for membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. You will develop excellent problem solving skills within a team-based environment. The program guides you towards practical, appropriate solutions to local and global problems involving water and other resources. These graduate characteristics will enable you to apply for a wide variety of positions inside and outside the engineering profession, both in Australia and overseas.

The program includes foundation studies in engineering and the sciences, engineering projects, engineering design, and in water supply and wastewater treatment systems. You will also study the advanced scientific methods that are used to monitor and manage the environment.

There is a strong emphasis on ecologically sustainable development throughout the program. During your studies, you will be presented with practical, real world applications of the course material. Guest lecturers from industry will ensure you have a high-level of exposure to current engineering professional practice. You will also be encouraged to find suitable vacation work experience to support your studies further.

Professional membership

Subject to Engineers Australia accreditation, graduates will be able to apply for membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. Graduates may also join:

  • Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA)
  • other relevant industry professional bodies 

Career opportunities

Students completing this degree can expect to find a wide range of engineering employment opportunities in Australia and overseas in:

  • engineering consultancies
  • local, state and federal government agencies
  • the mining industry
  • research organisations such as universities and the CSIRO
  • wastewater treatment companies/authorities
  • water supply companies/authorities

Engineering graduates are also increasingly likely to find employment in non-traditional engineering roles such as finance, marketing, merchant banking and management.
