Program overview
This is a four-year program enabling graduates to apply for membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
Students will develop excellent problem solving skills within a team-based environment. The program guides students towards practical, appropriate solutions to issues involving management of construction projects (such as design, structural integrity, human resource management, material selection, and environmental impacts). These graduate characteristics enable students to apply for a wide variety of positions inside and outside the engineering profession, both in Australia and overseas.
The program includes foundation studies in both engineering and the sciences, engineering projects, engineering design, business management and has a major study in management of construction projects. The importance of managing projects in a sustainable way is incorporated throughout the program.
Throughout their studies students will be presented with practical, real world applications of the course material. Guest lecturers from industry will ensure the students have a high level of exposure to current engineering professional practice. Students will also be encouraged to find suitable vacation work experience to further support their studies. Small class sizes enable students to have excellent access to lecturers and other teaching staff.
Career opportunities
A student who completes this degree could expect to have a wide range of engineering employment opportunities in Australia and overseas, including: local, state and federal government agencies, construction companies, engineering consultancies, building industry, research organisations such as universities and CSIRO.
In recent times, engineering graduates have also been increasingly likely to find employment in non-traditional engineering roles such as finance, marketing, merchant banking and management.
Membership: Subject to Engineers Australia accreditation, graduates will be able to apply for membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. Graduates may also join the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia (APESMA), and relevant industry professional bodies.
