Program overview

The Diploma of Event Management and Bachelor of Business (Tourism) is a dual award program offered jointly between the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT) and the University of the Sunshine Coast. The dual award consists of a Diploma through SCIT and a Bachelor of Business (Tourism) through the University.

In the first year, you undertake studies at SCIT's Mooloolaba campus four days per week, while undertaking one course towards your Bachelor of Business (Tourism) at the University's Sippy Downs campus.

During the first semester of your second year, three days are at SCIT, and two courses are taken at the University. From Semester 2 of the second year, the remaining 12 courses are taken at the University. Studying a dual degree such as this gives you double the advantage in the job market.

Career opportunities

Knowledge and skills acquired through this dual program are transferable across many sectors such as government, education, the arts, commerce, and industry. Opportunities may include hospitality industry, tourism distribution and support, tourist attraction operations, meetings management, event management, and transport and travel industries.

Teaching mode

There are different teaching modes between the SCIT Diploma modules and the University's Bachelor of Business courses. Diploma modules are face-to-face teaching with performance based assessment. The University's Bachelor of Business courses have three or four hours of contact per course per week, generally in the mode of a one hour lecture and two hour tutorial, with students completing a further six to seven hours of self-directed learning per course per week. The self-directed learning consists of readings, research, assignments and other assessment items.
