Australia's unique forests and plantations provide a sustainable ecosystem and sustainable resource for the forestry sector. The industry contributes over $22 billion (AUD) of economic turnover each year and employs over 75,000 people. Close to 1.6 billion people - more than 25 percent of the world's population - rely on forest resources for their livelihoods and most of them (1.2 billion) use trees on farms to generate food and cash. Moreover, many countries in the developing world draw on fuelwood to meet as much as 90 percent of energy requirements.
The Forest Industries Research Centre (FIRC), Tropical Forests and People Research Centre (TFPRC) and National Centre for Timber Durability and Design Life (Timber Durability) are proud to present the Forests for the Future research seminar series, aimed at providing an educational program for sharing current research activity within the centres with the broader UniSC and local Sunshine Coast community.
Researchers from FIRC, TFPRC and Timber Durability will present their current research. Emphasis will be placed on innovative approaches to field research in actively managed forests with industry and communities. Presentations will include the impacts that research is having on practice and policy.
All seminars are free and we welcome members of the public, local community, industry, government, not-for-profits, students and academia.
If you would like to be a part of our series or have any ideas on topics for upcoming seminars please contact FRIAdmin@usc.edu.au.
We look forward to seeing you at our next seminar.
