Step 3 Formal Grievance Appeal (Show Cause)

Important Information before Submitting your Appeal

A Step 3 Appeal is the last step within UniSC Internal review process. It is important to set out the reasons why you disagree with the previous outcome or the way in which this outcome was handled. You may review your previous outcome and determine that:

  • there may be new relevant information not already provided (medical certificates, support letters etc); and/or
  • that the relevant factors that were originally presented were not considered; and/or
  • perhaps procedural error could have occurred in the handling of your Show Cause

Your Show Cause Appeal should set out in detail how/why your academic progress has been impacted over the study periods you were placed on MAP Stage 1 & MAP Stage 2, resulting in MAP Stage 3. You should also include reasons why you were unable to seek support or complete the Academic Improvement Plan (AIP) as part of each MAP Stage.

You will need to also demonstrate how your future academic progress will improve.

Ensure to include evidence and information which wasn’t already taken into consideration in the previous Show Cause decision.

Examples:

  • Medical Certificate detailing treatment plans
  • Support letters from Student Wellbeing
  • Setting up regular sessions with an Academic Learning Adviser
  • Developing a Learning Access Plan
  • Evidence of changes in personal circumstances which may contribute to positive changes with your studies

It is recommended you contact the Student Guild where one of the student advocates can provide you with independent support and advice to best prepare your appeal. Either call, (07) 5456 3742 or email AdvocacyStudentGuild@usc.edu.au and a student advocate will speak with you.

You may also wish to reach out to the Student Ombudsman who can assist you to navigate and understand the policies and procedures related to your appeal. You can email the Student Ombudsman at studentombudsman@usc.edu.au.
