An overseas study placement is one of the many options being considered by University of the Sunshine Coast Science Deans Scholars student Karla van Huyssteen who has been awarded a prestigious Renouf Family Scholarship.

The 2015 school captain of Maryborough’s Riverside Christian College said the $20,000 scholarship would make a big difference to her university life and open the door to many new opportunities.

“I plan to put the funds towards expanding my research skills and international travel through USC’s Study Overseas program,” Karla said.

The Renouf Family Scholarships were established by Sir Clem Renouf in memory of his parents for their sacrifice in giving him the best educational opportunity.

“I would like to thank the Renouf family for their generous contribution and the genuine interest that they show towards the goals and progress of their scholarship students,” Karla said.

“Their passion for the community, scientific research, and involvement with Rotary is truly inspiring, and I am so humbled to have been selected to represent the family’s continuing legacy as a Renouf Family Scholarship student.”

The OP3 student received the scholarship in recognition of her impressive academic achievements during her senior high school years.

As well as being dux of her school, Karla represented Wide Bay at the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra, won the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Service Award and placed second in USC’s Pixi Science Award in 2014.

A keen interest in science and research inspired her to enrol this year in a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Deans Scholars Program at USC’s main campus at Sippy Downs.

The program allows Karla to complete a double degree in three years and is tailored to her needs by providing her with a senior academic mentor.

“I chose this program because of my love for science and interest in research and because it has a range of interest areas from biotechnology to animal ecology, which gives flexibility to my degree,” Karla said.

“I hope it will become the foundation for my knowledge and experience, leading to either a career in secondary education or through pursuing research by completing my PhD.”

Soon after beginning high school, Karla made up her mind to enrol at USC when she graduated.

“USC appealed to me because of its range of degrees, beautiful location, research opportunities and its personal study experience,” she said.
