School of Science, Technology and Engineering: Research and Workplace Opportunities

The School of Science, Technology and Engineering welcomes opportunities for students to engage with researchers and workplaces across a variety of programs. Opportunities range from single semester undergraduate workplace learning placements, to fully scaled Doctor of Philosophy research collaborations that span several years. These programs have different requirements, so consider for which program your project may suits best.

Workplace Learning

During Workplace Learning, students apply and extend the skills and knowledge developed through class-based learning in a work placement. Over either 96 or 192 hours within a single semester or session of structured and supervised activities within the workplace, students undertake a range of discipline related duties in a work setting, develop new professional competencies and relationships, and record and reflect on their experience to enhance employability and prepare for professional practice.

Special Research Project

Special Research Projects enable third year students to pursue a single semester research project in a study field of their choice. Students work with a USC academic supervisor to devise a project plan, undertake the related activities and report on those activities. Short, 1-2 month projects where a student can focus closely on a small component in collaboration with a USC academic supervisor are ideal Special Research Projects. Special Research Projects are an excellent lead in to Honours projects in most programs.

Honours (Science and Technology)

Science honours is a two semester (full time) or four semester (part time) undergraduate research program where students work with an academic supervisor to plan, implement and complete a research project in a field of the student’s interest. The research project comprises either a thesis or a thesis accompanied by an exegesis, as described in guidelines provided to students at the beginning of their enrolment. Consequently, there must be a degree of scientific novelty in within the project.

Honours (Engineering)

Engineering honours involves a part-time two semester undergraduate research program where students work with an academic supervisor to plan, implement and complete a research project in a field of the student’s interest. The research project comprises a thesis (4th year report), as described in guidelines provided to students at the beginning of their enrolment. Consequently, there must be a degree of scientific novelty within the project. Unlike Honours (Science), the Honours (Engineering) is part of a student’s Engineering degree; it is not additional to their undergraduate degree.

Higher Degree Research (Masters/PhD)

Higher degree research programs are advanced research programs that foster the development of independent research skills, scholarly analysis and an ability to communicate research findings. Degrees are awarded solely on the basis of a thesis produced under supervision of a USC academic, as judged by independent experts applying accepted contemporary international standards.
