Kelsie Fletcher

Kelsie is currently a Nursing Lecturer in the School of Health having relocated from the UK in 2024. She previously held various leadership roles at Bournemouth University as Year 2 Lead for the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Programme, Global Engagement Lead and Unit Lead for Applied Health Care Sciences 3 & Critical Health Care Sciences.

Kelsie has a passion for disaster management and response research, focusing on the role of the nurse and the strategic management of disasters. She is currently undertaking her PhD - titled 'The lived experiences of nurses working in disaster management and deployed in response to an international disaster'. Using Charmaz's grounded theory approach, due to personal experiences of deploying in response to conflict and natural disasters, Kelsie aims to co-construct the understanding of this experience with participants.

In response to covid-19, Kelsie was also involved in a joint project with Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Michele Board (BU), Dr Janet Scammell (BU), and Dr Dawn Morley (BU) funded by Health Education England (£20,000). This project examined the roles of advanced clinical practitioners (ACPs) in response to covid-19.

Kelsie's practice experience is varied from trauma and emergency nursing, remote medicine, primary healthcare and intensive care specialist nursing. She spent 6 years in the Australian Army as a Nursing Officer (Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps) prior to moving to the United Kingdom in 2016. From this time, she worked as a senior staff nurse in a National Health Service (NHS) Intensive Care Unit until November 2017, where she was appointed as a Lecturer in Nursing at BU. Kelsie completed her undergraduate studies, Bachelor of Nursing, at La Trobe University (Australia) in 2010, and subsequently completed her Master of Nursing (Critical Care - ICU) through La Trobe, in 2017. She has since completed her post graduate certificate in education (PGCE) in 2018 and attained fellowship higher education authority (FHEA).

Kelsie has a keen interest in supporting students and expanding their nursing knowledge and practice through team-based learning, problem-based learning and case study approaches. Further to the research above, she is also interested in research of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the military (intensive care, trauma and military specific injuries/experiences), Intensive Care patient experience, disaster management/logistical planning, and delivery of healthcare in humanitarian/peacetime operations and war.
