Dr. David Alonso-Caneiro, Senior Lecturer in Engineering (Mechatronics), is an academic and researcher passionately committed to two core principles: nurturing critical and independent thinking among students and driving research that brings tangible benefits to society.

David graduated from the University of Valencia (Spain) with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Telecommunications with First Class Honours in 2002 and a Master of Engineering in Electronics in 2004. After gaining industry experience, he joined QUT in 2007 to begin his PhD, which he successfully completed in 2010 with a thesis titled "Non-invasive Assessment of Tear Film Surface Quality." His research during this period focused on the development of a new technique for evaluating tear film quality, and his thesis earned him the QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award in 2010.

Before joining UniSC in 2023, David held the positions of Research Fellow (2011 to 2015) and Senior Research Fellow (2016 to 2022) in QUT's Contact Lens and Visual Optics Laboratory. His current research centres around the development of innovative methods to address complex problems, with a particular emphasis on creating techniques and devices that can enhance clinical and diagnostic capabilities, especially in the field of optometry and ophthalmology.

David is deeply committed to establishing a robust track record of publications in high-impact top-tier journals. To date, his research efforts have resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications and have contributed to numerous competitive research initiatives. Currently, he holds honorary academic positions at QUT, UNSW, and the Lions Eye Institute.
