With the release of ATARs just around the corner, your child may be wondering what happens if they don’t get the ATAR they’re hoping for. For many Year 12 students, the ATAR is all they think about and it can often overwhelm them and perpetuate a fear of ruining their lives if they don’t get the number they want.

It’s completely normal to have these feelings, and as a parent, it’s important to reassure your child that the ATAR doesn’t define who they are. While it may impact the way they get into university, getting a lower ATAR than expected certainly doesn’t mean university is out of reach.

So, what can your child do if your child’s ATAR is lower than expected?

Change preferences

If your child gets a lower than expected ATAR, they can always change their QTAC preferences. Preferences can be changed up to three times free of charge, however there is a limited window to change preferences after an offer has been made, so we recommend checking the QTAC key dates page.

Tertiary Preparation Pathway TPP

UniSC’s Tertiary Preparation Pathway gives students the opportunity to complete up to four free courses (or subjects) and gain direct entry into most USC degrees. Through TPP, your child will build their knowledge and confidence in the subject areas they’ll need for their degree, setting them up to succeed when it’s time for them to complete their uni degree.

TAFE/Vocational studies

Your child can complete a TAFE/VET qualification to get into university. We’ll assign a selection rank for a completed Certificate III or Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma. Your child may even receive credit for prior learning, reducing the cost and time on their UniSC degree.

Pathway Diplomas

UniSC’s pathway diplomas are another great way for students to get into university if they didn’t get the ATAR they were hoping for. Through a pathway diploma, students will get a taste of university and have something to show for it without the commitment of a full degree program. These diplomas are stand-alone qualifications that will give your child direct entry and up to one year’s credit for selected bachelor’s degrees. UniSC offers pathway diplomas in Business Innovation, Creative Industries, Science and Technology, and Social and Human Services.

So as your child begins preparing for their final assessments, it may help to ease the pressure by reminding them that there are many ways to get into university, they may just require a little extra work and some flexibility in their plans. Encourage them to do their best, but always be there for them and provide reassurance if things don’t go to plan.
