Student engagement and support

Access and grow talent

By embedding employability into curriculum, we develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities of our learners. This enables graduates to work, and contribute to their local and global communities to accelerate their career readiness and graduate outcomes. Industry collaborations provide companies with an opportunity to access our skilled students and graduate talent for both the current and future workforce.

We invite industry professionals from all sectors to partner with us to develop opportunities for our students to experience real projects and workplaces, develop their professional skills and improve their work readiness.

Work Integrated Learning (WIL)

Is your business in need of fresh ideas and willing to nurture the next generation of leaders through work experience or a short term project?

UniSC is proud to partner with a growing number of companies and governments to provide collaborative opportunities for our students to gain hands-on industry experience through Work Experience and Work Integrated Learning (WIL).

Student placements

WIL is embedded into most UniSC undergraduate degrees, and includes: internships, practicum, student placements, clinical placements, project work, wider field experience, professional practice and work experience.

These placement opportunities can be paid or unpaid and take place over several weeks, allowing students to earn academic credit towards their degree program. Generally, students must complete 96 hours of placement (equivalent to one day per week, over 12 weeks).

Industry projects

An industry project is specifically designed to address an organisational challenge or opportunity. The project could involve a specific area of research or investigation which will contribute to solving a business problem or supporting a business case.

Industry hosts can design dedicated projects for students to work on individually or in a dynamic multi-disciplinary team where they collaborate and develop customised recommendations under the supervision of one of our highly experienced academic experts.

Research students

Do you have a problem in industry and relevant to your business, where the research question is suitable for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) student to address?

HDR internships

UniSC can partner with industry to offer three-month internships for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates. Host organisations identify a short-term project suitable for a doctoral student to address in sixty (60) full-time working days. PhD candidates receive a monthly stipend paid by their host organisation for the duration of the internship.

These arrangements provide HDR students with an opportunity to put their research skills to use in an industry setting while offering considerable value to the host organisation.

Research scholarships

Under appropriate UniSC academic and industry supervision, PhD candidates undertake a co-designed research project with university and industry participation. PhD’s can be fully funded by the industry partner over the four years of the program, or co-funded with the University.

Alternatively, the National Industry PhD Program is a co-funded and competitive Commonwealth Government initiative, that supports PhD students to undertake industry-focused research projects and be equipped with the knowledge and skills to better translate university research into commercialisation outcomes.
