North Lakes State College’s 2021 co-captain Andre Mascarenhas says his decision to study locally at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Moreton Bay campus came down to three important factors – location, study options and access to the latest technology.

He also had the advantage of having already completed an economics subject through USC’s Headstart program while in Year 12, which helped boost his ATAR to 94.05 and inspired him to enrol in a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting).

“I really enjoyed studying accounting, business and economics at high school and through USC’s Headstart program – and having an amazing university lecturer really sealed the deal,” said Andre, who plans to major in economics and finance.

“At USC I have the option to complete a double degree in Business and Commerce. And the campus is so close to home and is equipped with the newest technology and resources needed to supplement my learning.”

“So I get the degree that I want, taught in a way that benefits me. Many of my high school friends are also attending USC with me and some are even studying the same degree.”

Andre and his friends will join more than 1,200 new students taking part in Orientation activities at USC’s Moreton Bay campus this week.

This week, USC will hold a range of on-campus and online orientation sessions and activities to help them prepare for the start of classes later this month.

On Wednesday 23 February, the Moreton Bay campus at Petrie will be filled with students taking part in academic skills workshops and sampling the social side of university life with stalls, live music, lawn games, campus tours and a giant scavenger hunt.

Andre is feeling quietly confident ahead of starting his studies, which he says will equip him with the knowledge and skills to make a difference in the business world.

“My ultimate career goal is using the combined accounting and economics knowledge that I gain from this degree to help struggling businesses thrive through developing innovative solutions that will result in profitable outcomes,” he said.
