After a two-year COVID-enforced hiatus, Open Day is back at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sippy Downs campus this Sunday, giving prospective students the chance to find their futures.

From seaweed demonstrations, ‘exploding’ engineering experiments, fat-wheeled bike rides and free NBL basketball games, the packed interactive program offers the opportunity to explore UniSC’s range of career-ready degrees and get immersed in university life for a day.

Close to 2,000 people have already pre-registered to visit the campus for Open Day, held online in 2020 and 2021.

“It will be wonderful to see future students and their family and friends talking with lecturers and current students and graduates, exploring our campus and finding out about all the opportunities open to them,” UniSC Vice Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett said.

“Our message to people considering studying at university is that ‘tomorrow starts today’. Open Day really can be that first step towards a new future,” she said.

UniSC’s sports precinct is open for tours, including the aquatic centre and high-performance gym where UniSC’s Commonwealth Games medal-winning Spartan swim team trains.

There is also the chance to catch some free live National Basketball League action at the stadium, with UniSC Rip City women’s team playing their last home games against the Northside Wizards at 1pm followed by the men’s game at 3pm.

Fat-wheeled bikes will be available to ride between the main campus and sports precinct.

High-tech study options will be on display at UniSC’s Immerse Lab, with the cutting-edge visualisation facilities hosting a Games Showcase featuring the latest works of games design students.

There will also be the opportunity to take part in a performance workshop at UniSC’s creative industries stage and get hands-on in the paramedics, engineering and exercise science simulation labs.

Visitors can see how seaweed is changing the world, with demonstrations of how UniSC researchers are using seaweed to make climate-positive impacts such as methane reduction in livestock.

Targeted sessions have been designed for those looking to upskill or change careers, including   options for short courses and other university pathways.

Other sessions will focus on Year 12 students looking to finalise their study plans for next year, and Year 10 and 11 students wanting a head start on their university degrees.

A series of short half-hour information talks will cover the many degrees on offer, including getting started, placements and what future careers might look like.

At the Hub, lecturers and tutors will be available for one-on-one chats, while staff and student ambassadors can help with applying for university and scholarships, options to study overseas and ways UniSC can support students throughout their studies.
