A work placement in Vanuatu while at university has given new Redcliffe occupational therapist Chelsea-Maree Campbell an even wider understanding of community health care.

The USC Occupational Therapy Honours graduate went above and beyond for her study and career during her degree, travelling from the Sunshine Coast campus to the South Pacific island nation to volunteer her time and growing expertise.

The placement was coordinated through a partnership between USC and Churches of Christ-Medical Santo, an organisation that helps provide health care to the region.

“My final Occupational Therapy placement in Vanuatu was an invaluable experience, focusing on neurological and paediatric intervention within the community setting for seven weeks,” said the Clontarf Beach State High School graduate.

The 23-year-old now works full-time at Redcliffe’s Complete Rehab Allied Health Clinic in a community setting.

“I work with clients of all ages and varying abilities, assisting them with clinic or home-based rehabilitation, home modifications, assistive technology and equipment prescription,” she said.

“I’m so grateful to work alongside a wonderful team of allied health practitioners and being able to manage a variable caseload.

“I chose to study OT because it aligned with my core values, active lifestyle and desire to help others. Empowering people to reach their full potential is so meaningful to me.

“USC provided me with the competency skills and knowledge to confidently progress as a new graduate. All of my placements and practical examinations have been transferrable to the real-world setting.”

Chelsea-Maree said she enjoyed USC’s smaller class sizes, sense of community and program structure. “It was also pretty cool having the beaches and cafes so close,” she said.

QTAC applications are open to study at USC in Semester 2 this year.
