Free health checks that could improve lives, and university and career advice that could be life-changing, are on offer to visitors to USC’s Fraser Coast campus this Saturday.

USC has incorporated the health checks, part of a state-wide “My Health for Life” initiative, into its annual Open Day for prospective students and their families and friends at the campus in Old Maryborough Road, Hervey Bay from 10am to 1pm.

USC Nursing Science students, supervised by registered nurses and academics, will carry out quick assessments of people’s risk for type 2 diabetes, blood pressure problems, heart disease and stroke.

Lecturer in Nursing Science April Martin said people were often unaware of their risks of developing future health conditions because there were no obvious signs.

“These quick and easy checks are available to all members of the community and are about giving people peace of mind to know how their health is tracking,” she said.

“This Open Day activity is also a chance for those considering a nursing career to tour USC’s labs, talk to current student and academics about the Nursing Science program and see students practicing their skills.”

Almost 20 degrees and pathway programs will be showcased at Open Day including degrees in Tourism, Leisure and Event Management, Animal Ecology, Accounting, Education, Science, Psychology, Social Work and Environmental Science.

USC Pro-Vice Chancellor of Engagement Professor Joanne Scott said visitors would have the chance to talk one-on-one with staff, graduates and current students.

“Going to university can be life-changing and sometimes taking the first step can be as simple as having a chat with someone about your options,” Professor Scott said.

At the Info Hub, academics will be on hand to answer questions about programs and courses and visitors can gain practical career and study advice, including applying for university, scholarships and study support.

Two special panel sessions will give prospective students the chance to discuss how to choose the right program and career path based on their interests, strengths and goals.

They can also quiz advisors, lecturers, graduates and current students about their university experiences and gain advice on how to juggle study with work and family commitments.

USC will hold another Open Day at its Sunshine Coast campus at Sippy Downs on Sunday 22 July, with a free bus service available for Fraser Coast residents who would like to attend. Register for Open Day.
