USC’s partnership with the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute is giving high school biology students in the Moreton Bay Region the chance to experience ‘A Day in the Life of a Scientist’ at the institute in Brisbane.

USC Student Recruitment Manager Courtney Geritz said the program, funded with a $10,000 Advance Queensland Engaging Science grant, aimed to inspire Year 11 and 12 students considering science as a career path.

“USC and QIMR Berghofer are dedicated to educating our scientists of the future,” she said. “We have been running this program since July and there are still some places available from September through to early November.”

Ms Geritz said the school visits to the institute gave students hands-on experience in a medical research laboratory and interaction with scientists who were leaders in their fields.

“The school students gain an extra perspective from their USC hosts, who are current science students excited about their career pathways,” she said.

Three experimental activities are offered to students in the research areas of anti-microbials and disease; immunity and vaccines; or genetics.
