Clever young science minds from across the Fraser Coast have been put to the test at the Science and Engineering Challenge, hosted by USC and the Queensland STEM Education Network (QSEN).

More than 280 Year 9 and 10 students drew on the principles of science and utilised creative thinking and problem solving skills in the event at Hervey Bay on May 5.

Working in teams, the students competed in eight logistical challenges that included creating a communications system using coloured lights and optical fibres, making earthquake-proof towers, designing a bionic hand and building a span bridge.

Eight of the region’s high schools took part in the challenge. The regional champions will go on to represent the Fraser Coast at state level.

The national science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach program is designed to inspire Year 9 and 10 students to consider a future career in science and technology.
