St John’s College 2016 school captain and chemistry whiz Erin Medland has enrolled at USC to pursue a career as a science teacher.
Erin, 17, of Palmwoods scored an OP2 and has signed up for a combined Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Science at USC’s main campus at Sippy Downs.
Erin received the chemistry award at her high school in both Years 11 and 12, and said she was excited about expanding her knowledge of science at university.
“I’ve always been interested in maths and science, and I had some great teachers at school,” she said. “I’d like to pass that positive experience on to young people myself.
“I think the most important thing as a teacher is to have a passion for the subject.
“Being school captain definitely helped me gain a lot of confidence, and I loved the school environment – that’s partly why I chose Education.”
Erin, who competes in netball and play guitar and piano, said visiting the classrooms and laboratories at USC’s Sippy Downs campus had made it her first preference.
“Studying at USC will allow me to stay close to home, and I’ve really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere around campus when I’ve visited for school excursions,” she said.
“I chose the double degree because it allows me to have lots of options once I complete my study. I’m looking forward to the independence that comes with uni life and meeting some like-minded people.”
USC’s Orientation Week will be held from Monday 20 February before classes begin on Monday 27 February. For application and enrolment information, visit www.usc.edu.au/learn.
