A world leader in identity and cyber security will provide important tips on ways to prevent and respond to cybercrime at a free public seminar at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday 12 July.

USC Senior Research Fellow Dr David Lacey will present ‘Cybercrime and you – when bad things happen to your good name’, as part of USC’s annual Research Conference from 11-14 July.

Dr Lacey, who is Managing Director of IDCARE, Australia and New Zealand’s national identity and cybercrime support service, advises government and industry on how to anticipate and respond to cyber-related threats.

He is involved in community engagement programs regarding identity theft and cybercrime.

“This presentation will take you on a journey of what Australians experience when they are victims of what is described as the ‘crime of the century’,” he said.

“It will challenge community perceptions about who is vulnerable to these crimes and the effectiveness of prevention and detection efforts.”

The public seminar is part of a program of presentations, workshops and challenges at the Research Conference to highlight local projects having real-world impact.

A second free public seminar on Wednesday 13 July will showcase how research by the University of the Sunshine Coast is helping local, national and international athletes along the road to the Olympics and other elite level sport.

Both lectures will be held at USC’s Innovation Centre auditorium from 5.30pm.
