Help is at hand for new Fraser Coast students about to embark into university study for the first time.

The University of the Sunshine Coast is running an academic skills workshop for hundreds of students enrolled at USC Fraser Coast before the official university year begins on Monday 29 February.

USC Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) Professor Karen Nelson said the intensive workshop would help students develop essential skills and strategies including time management, notetaking, reading strategies, referencing, essay and report writing, and critical thinking.

“Understandably some students may be apprehensive about how they will cope with academic study, especially those who left school several years ago,” Professor Nelson said.
“It can also be just as daunting for those who have just completed high school.

“There may be other students who are wondering how they are going to juggle studying at university with other parts of their lives.

“One of the modules covered in the workshop will provide skills to manage their time and help to create a realistic and effective schedule to keep their studies and outside lives on track.”

The workshop is also open to continuing students and those undertaking the University’s innovative Tertiary Preparation Pathway program.

The pre-semester Academic Writing and Study Skills Workshop runs from 24-26 February, from 9am to 3pm, at the USC Fraser Coast campus in Hervey Bay. No prior registration is necessary.
