A random internet search has taken Shariq Ghaznavi from working as a junior accountant in Karachi, Pakistan, to a study adventure in the heart of Brisbane.

Mr Ghaznavi’s quest to improve his career prospects led him to the University of the Sunshine Coast’s SouthBank campus where he recently completed a Master of Professional Accounting.

“I must say that coming to Australia to study a Masters at USC was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” Mr Ghaznavi, 24, said.

He said the small, friendly environment of the USC SouthBank campus in Brisbane’s cultural and entertainment precinct was an important part of his international study experience.

The expanding campus caters for students from across Brisbane and the world, with international students making up around 60 percent of enrolments and creating a distinctive multi-cultural atmosphere.

“Experiencing university in the middle of a bigger Australian city was important to enhance my skills and created many opportunities,” Mr Ghaznavi said.

“Everything at USC SouthBank was so convenient. Connecting with other students was easier and the campus had so many extra-curricular activities to join in,” said the keen swimmer who made good use of the free swimming areas in the South Bank Parklands.

Mr Ghaznavi embraced campus life by becoming vice-president of the Accountancy Student Association, organising group study sessions and working for USC SouthBank as part of its Student@Work program.

“I received remarkable experience as a Student@Work. I was employed by the University to provide support to students from various backgrounds, assisting them to access the learning management system, library services, printing, IT and so on.”

The world now awaits, with Mr Ghaznavi saying he hopes to secure an accounting job overseas where he can exercise the skills he has learned during his Masters study.

“My experience at USC SouthBank enhanced my skills outside the classroom. I have gained great confidence and interpersonal skills and have improved my presentation, time management and organisational skills.”
