Students weigh in to bridge-building contest

Fourteen teams of Engineering students have used raw pasta, string and superglue to produce entries for this year’s Spaghetti Bridge Competition at the University of the Sunshine Coast tomorrow (Wednesday 6 April).

The creative thinkers have used their theoretical and practical skills gained from the subject Mechanics of Materials to build 350mm-long bridges that will be tested to destruction to determine which has the greatest load-carrying capacity.

Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Selvan Pather, who is organising the event, said engineers from Covey Associates would judge and award prizes for best design and construction as well as strength.

Everyone is welcome to watch the action from midday on Wednesday 6 April outside the Brasserie on campus at Sippy Downs. Winners will be announced at 2.45pm-3pm.

Invited onlookers including local school students also will get the chance to tour USC’s world-class 3D virtual learning facility, the CAVE2.
