University of the Sunshine Coast student Laura Ehsman has the corporate world firmly in her sights after securing a graduate accounting position with global professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Laura, 22, of Buderim is in her final year of a combined Business and Commerce (Accounting) degree at USC and was offered a graduate role after completing a summer internship at the firm’s Brisbane office.

The former Siena Catholic College student enjoyed studying accounting at high school, and said undertaking a degree at USC was the natural next step.

"Accounting has always suited my personality, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else," she said.

"The USC staff are very supportive, especially in the accounting discipline. Help is always there, and being a smaller university there’s more opportunity for one-on-one interaction with staff, which is important preparation for working life."

Laura said studying at USC meant she could remain close to her family and combine her learnings with part-time work.

"The campus is right around the corner from home, which means I’ve been able to have the support of my family and friends," she said. "I’ve also been lucky to work for a local business in Mooloolaba. I’m really glad I chose to stay on the Coast," she said.

Laura’s passion for her studies was evident at the recent USC Faculty of Arts and Business Awards and Prizes ceremony, where she took home four prizes totalling $2,500.

She was awarded the Holmans Accounting and Taxation Bursary, the ANZ Bank Prize for the Highest Achieving Student in Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility, the BDO Prize for the Highest Achieving Student in Auditing and Professional Practice, and the Garland Waddington Prize for the Highest Achieving Student in Retirement and Superannuation.

USC School of Business Deputy Head Dr Peter Baxter said the University was proud to see students secure competitive and rewarding graduate positions.

"Laura is an extremely hard working student who has excelled throughout her studies at USC," Dr Baxter said. "She is a shining example of how dedication to study can lead to great graduate career outcomes."
