Eight outstanding staff awarded for excellence

The outstanding efforts of eight University of the Sunshine Coast staff in research, learning and teaching, engagement and service have been recognised with Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence.

The group, which includes experts in fields ranging from cultural geography to driver safety, were presented with their awards at a ceremony at the Chancellery recently. Each staff member receives $5,000 towards their professional development.

The recipients were:

Excellence in Learning and Teaching:

Dr Selvan Pather, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering

Dr Pather has made an outstanding contribution to the development of mechanical engineering and the utilisation of the University’s new world-class visualisation facilities. His exceptional learning and teaching leadership and practice encourage students’ engagement with authentic and unique learning experiences.

Dr Nicole Masters, Associate Lecturer in Bioscience

Dr Masters is highly regarded for her enthusiasm and commitment to her students’ success in first year bioscience, biology and physiology courses. Her teaching and learning practices have contributed to an increase in student retention and grade outcomes.

Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Sessional):

Ms Amanda Miller, Faculty of Arts and Business

Ms Miller has taught within the Geography and Development Studies majors in the Bachelor of Social Sciences program for the past six years, including the development of an undergraduate field trip to Cambodia in 2014. She has supported first year students to transition into university life and provides authentic learning experiences for students.

Excellence in Research:

Dr Terry Lucke, Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering

Dr Lucke has been a pioneer in research within the Engineering discipline who, through his dedication and leadership has strengthened USC’s research capability and advanced a productive research culture. He is also an excellent USC citizen.

Excellence in Research (Early Career Researcher):

Dr Tristan Pearce, Research Fellow

Dr Pearce is a human geographer within the Sustainability Research Centre, with an international research profile in the human dimensions of global environmental change, and in particular, the integration of Indigenous knowledge in climate change adaptation research. His research has had a significant impact in his field.

Dr Bridie Scott-Parker, Research Fellow

Dr Scott-Parker epitomises the USC research vision by participating in a global community of practice to develop and implement her research through the International Adolescent Road Safety Research Consortium and the Adolescent Risk Research Unit (ARRU). Dr Scott-Parker’s research career is exceptional and has cemented her at the leading edge of her field, both nationally and internationally.

Excellence in Engagement:

Dr Retha Scheepers, Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management

Dr Scheepers has made exceptional contributions in engagement that have benefitted the University and the broader community, including as a lead organiser of the Startup Weekend Sunshine Coast over the last two years. Dr Scheepers helps her students bridge the gap between the lecture theatre and the world of startup business by creating networking opportunities for entrepreneurial students.

Excellence in Service:

Ms Amanda Boyes, Personal Assistant to Head of School, Law

Ms Boyes has played a major role in the establishment and development of the USC Law School, and provides exceptional professional and administrative support in a broad range of areas. Ms Boyes is a principal point of contact for prospective students and has been a reliable source of advice and reassurance as students familiarise themselves with the University’s newest professional program.
