John Marsden

Honorary Doctorate (September 2020)

John Marsden was named a Honorary Doctorate in September 2020 in recognition of his contribution to literature for youth and his success in founding new student centred schools: Candlebark and the Alice Miller School.

John Marsden spent his early life in regional Victoria and Tasmania and, after facing some hurdles early in his life and drifting during his 20's, eventually found his vocation as a teacher and as a highly successful author of books for young people. His Tomorrow series, commencing with "Tomorrow, When the War Began" will be known to many. He has won every major writing award in Australia and many international awards. In 2006, he founded an alternative school, the Candlebark School in the Macedon Ranges and in 2016, he opened the Alice Miller School which has a focus on the arts. His persistence throughout life, despite obstacles, and achievements in Australia and on the world stage make him a worthy recipient of the degree, Doctor of the University.
