Adjunct Professor Tom Savvoulidis (MBBS, FRACS)

Dr Tom Savvoulidis is a highly skilled Australian trained, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon who has been in continuous clinical practice for over 20 years.

Dr Savvoulidis has a special interest in joint preservation and Anterior Approach for Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery (AMIS), Patient Matched Knee Replacement Surgery, as well as shoulder surgery. He was fortunate to be the first South Australian Orthopaedic Surgeon to be trained In Anterior Minimally Invasive Total Hip replacement surgery. Dr Savvoulidis has trained and provided mentoring for surgeons around Australia and Internationally on this technique.

He currently uses the latest techniques available for problems involving joints of the upper and lower limb and is dedicated to providing patients with quality care and personalised treatment. This includes non-operative as well as operative interventions. From 2000 till the present Dr Savvoulidis has successfully performed over 2000 knee replacements and over 3000 Anterior Minimally Invasive Total Hip Replacements. He has been particularly impressed with the improvement in post-operative pain and speed of rehabilitation.

The Anterior Minimally Invasive Total Hip Replacement offers the advantages of less post-operative pain, fewer complications, shorter hospital stay, improved cosmesis and a more rapid rehabilitation with better functional results. This approach will become increasingly popular amongst my colleagues and change the way Hip Replacements are performed in this country. The majority of patients undergoing a Total Hip Replacement are suitable for an anterior minimally invasive approach.

Originally from Germany, his family migrated to Australia in 1979, and is able to converse fluently in English, German and Greek. He graduated in 1989 from Adelaide University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. In 2005 he attained his Masters Certificate in Orthopaedic Surgery and Advanced Techniques, in Switzerland.

Dr Savvoulidis is frequently asked to attend and present at national and international orthopaedic meetings.
