Graduate Certificate in Anterior Hip Arthroplasty
The Graduate Certificate in Anterior Hip Arthroplasty (SC526) has been developed specifically for orthopaedic surgeons, to provide the latest technical and clinical advances in total hip arthroplasty, and the surgical competencies to safely conduct the direct anterior approach (DAA) for hip replacement.
This program specialises in the minimally invasive DAA for total hip arthroplasty (THA). The DAA|THA is a muscle and nerve sparing approach that may be associated with certain benefits, including; reduced blood loss, shorter incision, decreased postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay and rehabilitation period, reduced risk of dislocation, and faster return to normal mobility. With this approach the surgeon can achieve greater accuracy and reproducibility of component implantation by utilising real-time imaging intra-operatively. This program will help surgeons to avoid adverse events, outcomes and technical errors during their DAA|THA learning curve.
This surgical technique can be technically demanding and may also have a specific complication profile. Certain complications have an increased prevalence during the learning phase of this procedure. The goal of the program is to allow surgeons to safely navigate the DAA|THA learning curve to minimise the risk of unnecessary early complications.
This program has been co-created in partnership with Medacta International, an global orthopaedic company, specialising in the design and production of orthopaedic products and accompanying surgical techniques. The program will be co-delivered by nationally and internationally recognised orthopaedic surgeons who specialise in these techniques.

The entry requirements for admission are based on the following criteria:
- a recognised Medical degree; and
- current nationally recognised medical registration, maintained for the duration of the program; and
- previously completed an accredited specialist surgical training as an orthopaedic surgeon (Australian Orthopaedic Association, as an agent of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent).
Admission is also subject to an application process that will include review by a selection panel, and possibly an interview with the Program Coordinator.
The program has been purposefully designed and sequenced as a part-time study load, that is appropriate for orthopaedic surgeons with large clinical commitments.
Post admission requirements
Students must maintain the following;
- medical registration (i.e. Australian Medical Board registration) for the duration of the program
- meet or exceed UniSC placement mandatories to maintain clinical practicum; including provision of a
1. vaccination schedule,
2. Blue Card, and
3. National Criminal History clearance.
Additional entry information
- IELTS (Academic) – Overall score of 7 with minimum of 7.0 in all other subtests
- TOEF: Paper based – overall score of 785 with a writing score of 5.5
- Internet based – overall score of 105 with no subscore less than 25
- Pearson test of English – Overall 65 with no subscore less than 65
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) ^ – Overall 67 with no less than good in each skill
- CAE (or CPE) ^^ – Overall 185 or above will no less than 185 in each skill
In order to graduate you must:
- Successfully complete 48 units as outlined in the Program Structure
The program is delivered online with mandatory on-site requirements; undertaken at suitable surgical simulation setting (SGY701 ), and at the student’s or supervisor’s place of clinical practice (SGY702 and SGY703 ).
Program notes
- Completing this program within the specified (part-time) duration is based on studying 24-unit points per semester (2 courses) and following the recommended study sequence.
- The unit value of all courses is 12 units unless otherwise specified

WIL notes
Students will likely undertake part or all of their clinical practicum at a place of their consultancy. The academic team recognise the following as potential conflicts and will address the following prior to commencement of practicum for all stakeholders. This includes the following;

Students will need to meet the State Government requirements to undertake placement within a clinical and surgical setting.
