Professor Fiona Bogossian is Deputy Dean, School of Health.

Fiona is Registered Nurse and Midwife with qualifications in education, public health and epidemiology who has over 3 decades of tertiary education experience. In 2018 Fiona commenced at UniSC as Professor of Practice Education in Health and, until 2022, was Academic Lead at the Sunshine Coast Health Institute (SCHI). In 2022, Fiona was invited to lead the UniSC School of Health Strategic Steering Group to inform the unification of the then School of Health & Behavioural Sciences and the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Paramedicine to become the School of Health.

Fiona’s engagement is demonstrated at national and international levels through a long history of State and Federal ministerial appointments, membership of research foundation grants committees, and accreditation panels. She was Sub-Editor for Women & Birth (2005-2019), Chair of Universitas 21 Deans of Nursing & Midwifery and Member U21 Health Sciences Group Executive (2013-2016) and Panel Member for the ARC – ERA Impact and Engagement Pilot (2107). Most recently Fiona was Senior Education Expert for Midwifery Accreditation Committee of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (2018 - 2023).

Fiona has a sustained and strong track record in two areas of research concentration relating to perinatal health and health workforce education. Her research has wide impact from changing clinical and education practice to informing government policy. She has expertise in systematic and scoping reviews, cross sectional survey design, longitudinal cohort studies, randomised controlled trials, qualitative approaches, mixed methods and consumer co-design/led research.

She has published over 120 peer reviewed papers, 10 books/chapters and has made over 150 conference presentations including keynote and invited presentations. ORCID ID: 0000-0001-9909-5852. The impact of her publications is highlighted by a Field Weighted Citation Impact (2012-2021) of 2.66. Since 2008 she has been a named investigator on competitive grants totaling over $4 million including Cat 1, OLT and ALTC and Cat 4 grants.

Fiona was at the forefront of the transition of nursing (and subsequently midwifery) education, from the apprenticeship model into the tertiary sector. She established quality pre-registration undergraduate programs, postgraduate discipline specific programs and research training pathways and was responsible for the first Bachelor of Midwifery program in Queensland. She developed Honours and Clinical Research Pathways and established education scholarship schemes. In 2017, Fiona was awarded a Senior Fellow in Higher Education Academy for leadership in the design of e-portfolios and in simulation pedagogy and research.

As Professor of Practice Education in Health, Fiona has accelerated the development of interprofessional (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) models for UniSC and SCHI, developed a Best Practice Framework for IPE at UniSC https://doi.org/10.25907/00141, and lead the development and pilot implementation of a series of Introductory and Faculty Development IPE-4-IPCP online learning modules which provide a unified approach to IPE. Over the past decade, her direct teaching (face-to-face and online) has been highly rated and focused on applied research skills and evidence-based practice.

Fiona has successfully completed 25 HDR scholars, including 13 PhD completions as a Principal Supervisor. She currently supervises 5 HDR scholars as Principal and Mentor Supervisor. She takes a career development approach to supervision which is reflected in the success of her candidates and postdoctoral scholars as measured by securing competitive grants, scholarships, and awards. The quality of her HDR supervision has been recognised in three Research Supervision Awards.
