Yuri Kriel

Dr Yuri Kriel is a teaching and research staff member within the School of Health at UniSC. Yuri teaches into the clinical exercise physiology program with a focus on the role of physical activity in the prevention, treatment and management of cardiopulmonary, metabolic and cancer disease states. He is an accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) with Exercise and Sports Science Australia and has worked clinically as an AEP within the greater Brisbane area, in the United Kingdom in the areas of cardiopulmonary, cardiac and respiratory diagnostics and as a Biokineticist in South Africa, bringing varied clinical expertise and experiences to his teaching and research areas.

Dr Kriel’s research is focused on understanding the health impacts and mechanisms of chronic diseases, and the role of physical activity and other novel interventions that improve individuals’ health and well-being during cardiovascular, metabolic and cancer disease states and survivorship. He is a member of the VasoActive research group at UniSC, with expertise in near infrared spectroscopy evaluation of microvascular perfusion, clinical exercise testing and monitoring. This group forms part of well-established national and international collaborative research networks.

Research areas

  • The role of physical activity in the prevention, treatment and management of chronic disease
  • Near infrared spectroscopy for the assessment of tissue oxygenation, perfusion and macro and microvascular function
  • Clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • The impact of the human-animal bond in health and disease

Teaching areas

  • SPX301 Exercise in cardiorespiratory and metabolic health
  • SPX410 Exercise management for chronic disease
  • SPX413 Occupational rehabilitation and case management
  • Cardiac pathophysiology and electrocardiography

Dr Yuri Kriel’s specialist areas of knowledge and research interest includes the role of physical activity in the prevention, treatment and management of chronic disease, near infrared spectroscopy for the assessment of tissue oxygenation, perfusion and macro and microvascular function, clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing and the impact of the human-animal bond in health and disease. Current projects include skeletal muscle microvascular blood flow responsiveness, relationship with myocardial microvascular blood flow in coronary artery disease, the effect of an aquatic compared to a land-based resistance training program in cancer patients and assessing parkrun for walking rehabilitation for people living with, and beyond, cancer.
