His interest is particularly in the area of tourism, and he has been involved in many community-based organisations over a period of 37 years. Michael was the President of Caloundra Tourism Incorporated from its inception in 2002 until its dissolution in 2010, when it was taken over by Sunshine Coast Destination Limited. Michael was a foundation member of the Caloundra Toastmasters Club serving, at times, in the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President and President, whilst at the same time being involved with the Caloundra Lions Club and operating his pharmacy business in Caloundra. After being involved with the Caloundra Lions Club, Michael was the President of the Caloundra Arts Centre Association Incorporated and the Caloundra Art and Crafts Festival for a period of nine years from 1978 to 1987. The Caloundra Art and Crafts Centre was built with funds raised from this Festival.
