Community Work
SCS 260 (Offering: 2003)

Description

Contemporary society is faced with constant change stemming from political, social, global and economic factors. In a climate that promotes minimalist government intervention, competition and individualism the opposing forces of collective endeavour, commitment to participatory practices and human rights are deemed secondary. This raises a range of social justice issues, concerned with ways in which domination of marginal groups in society occurs, and ways in which disadvantage and powerlessness are reinforced through the various social institutions. This course introduces students to the nature of community work and how it can be utilised as a tool of empowerment and social change. It explores concepts in community work and introduces students to the basic theoretical frameworks underlying practice issues.
