Description
This course equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to evaluate, conduct and commission social and community research. In order to understand how social data are produced and analysed, the connections between theoretical orientations, methodology and methods of social research are explored. Students formulate and design a research proposal and examine the procedures and practical examples of popular research methods such as interviewing, survey techniques and observation. Controversial debates concerning ethics, the relationship of science to social research, issues of validity, and research with minorities are also examined.
