Environmental Restoration Practice

Description

This is a practical/hands on orientated course drawing on the knowledge and concepts explored in previous Environmental Restoration courses (Water and Sediment Processes, Hydrology and Geomorphology, Restoration Ecology). The course is designed to provide both practical hands on experience in an environmental restoration project, field assessment of selected restoration projects, and the principles underlying restoration project design and implementation procedures. The course will follow case studies to illustrate a cross section of restoration techniques and objectives. Students will investigate a variety of techniques and methods available for restoration projects with different objevtives. Emphasis will be placed on the evaluation of the appropriateness and cost benefit analysis of available techniques and the development of a discriminatory approach to their utilisation. Attention will be paid to the process of developing the objectives and goals achievable and appropriate for any restoration project. Students will become involved in designing and implementing a restoration project, enabling them to work through both the theoretical and the practical processes. Throughout the course the emphasis will be on using scientific principles in conjunction with evaluation of practical limitations to develop and design implementation and management guidelines for restoration projects.
