Wind, sand, water and plants work together in an endless cycle to create K’gari (Fraser Island).

At 122km long, it is the largest sand island in the world, with many exceptional natural wonders including:

  • Composed almost entirely of sand built up from more than 700,000 years of tidal action the worlds oldest recorded dune-building sequence.
  • Over 250km of stunning beaches with vast, uninterrupted views.
  • Diverse sand formations including massive sandblows and more than 40km of striking coloured sand cliffs.
  • Towering rainforests growing on high sand dunes, a unique phenomenon.
  • An incredible landscape of freshwater lakes, swamps and creeks, including the highest and largest perched lakes on the planet.
  • One of the worlds largest sand island aquifers.
  • A vast array of ecosystems, including wallum heathlands, wetlands, rainforests and beaches.
  • More than 930 species of plants, over 350 species of birds and over 40 species of mammals, including the iconic Fraser Island dingo.
